So, two years ago I wrote a rant about ‘America’s Digital Goddess’, Kim Komando. In my rant, I claimed that she was Incompetent, a disgrace to geekdom and deserving of a very painful and comedically pleasing death.
Lately, for whatever reason, my article has gained some popularity and I have been getting comments telling me how much of a jerk I am for saying such horrible mean things about such a kind and smart radio host. So, I’ve decided to revise some of my views on our gal, and check out her site to see if the caliber of her advice has spiked upward recently. So, join me as I point out obvious flaws and poke more holes in her articles.
What to look for in a web host?
You see, Richard runs a web site on Tripod. He spends $20 a month, and he gets 5MB and 1GB of transfer for his cash. After talking to his six year old son who points out that for $1.99 a month he could get features and no banner-ads, he decides to ask Kim what she’d look for in a web host.
Well, Kim figures, he should make sure the shared hosting plan he goes with is fast. She’d also make sure that whichever host he goes with should have some kind of back-up system in place.
Things she missed? Well, he could make sure the hosting company runs the latest version of PHP, supports mySQL, he could go with Linux hosting so he could make sure he had the performance and configurability of Apache Web Server. Of course, he might need Perl or a CGI-Bin, or ASP.net hosting… so I’d probably tell him to stare at an FTP client for a few minutes and figure out what he needs. If he made his site in Dreamweaver, I’d tell him to go with a LAMP configuration so if he ever decided to install a blog or a forum, he could. And, if it were me, I’d pay close attention to which back-end software they are using. There’s nothing worse than getting a great deal on hosting, just to find out the control panel blows.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of Plesk. However, cPanel’s way more common and in recent years it has really matured. Now, I know what your thinking… Doug, your only pointing these things out because you have used shared hosting accounts! How would Kim know about PHP or your SQL? I mean, can you really expect Kim Komando to know anything about shared hosting? Her IT guy handles komando.com for her! It’s NOT HER FAULT!
Which is really my point. Kim Komando’s an idiot. Stay tuned for more patches to bad advice.

I totally agree with any and all rants about how horrible she is. If I want a good laugh I’ll turn on her show on my way to my IT job.
She is a total waste of time for anyone that that wants to really be informed of the facts. She not only gives bad advice but as you point out when she does give advice it is either totally lacking or often times just stupid.
Even on a piece of lowly technical advice she is lame. As an example. Today I turned on the channel not really meaning to listen to her, but it turned out a caller had some questions on an XBOX 360.
We all know what a MS shill she is (another sore spot to me) but when the caller asked for advice on the different models she mentioned the HD sizes and the hdmi of the Elite model, then proceeds to tell the caller that the HD space really isn’t a big deal and if you find you run out you can always transfer info to memory cards.
What a dolt!!!! first off, the new dashboard of the XBOX which sucks BTW at least will now allow you to install a game directly on the drive instead of relying on the constant spinning of the optical drive. Lowers heat, increases performance, but also take right about 7GB for each install.
This alone is a reason to get the biggest HD you can. Does she ever mention this? NO. DOes she even mention the cost and pain it would be to constantly transfer to a memory card? NO, so what does she do?
Since they are big into giving away stuff at the moment she gives the caller an XBOX, great for him, but sucks for any of the other poor listeners out there that are going to base their purchase on her advice.

Komando is a total poser. She has a degree in Computer Science from 1985, which is completely worthless today.
Leo Laporte (http://twit.tv/) kicks her ass each and every weekend with his radio program. And he does six hours a weekend compared to her three.
